The officer began searching for the crook instantly, and I began wandering about. Suddenly, I heard muffled voices! They led me to a drainpipe. The voices sounded louder here! “Officer! Come here!” He ran over. He tried lifting up the drainpipe cover with all his might. It came off with a shriek and a creak. “Let’s go!” he said as he began climbing down the ladder that lead down into the depths of the city. The sewer smelt of many unrecognizable stenches. The officer whipped out a flashlight from his pocket and shone it forwards. The muffled sounds were getting louder and louder. We kept walking. Suddenly, we saw Edward! He was tied up on a chair. We didn’t hesitate to untie him as fast as we could. Not long after we finished, the crook was back. “Hey!” he yelled. We began to run. As soon as we were out, the officer closed the drainpipe cover and locked it. The crook was trapped inside. More policemen came. The officer instructed two of his staff to send Edward to the hospital immediately and others to go back to the drainpipe to catch the crook. “Come with me to the port; I will reward you,” he said. I followed him and he held an announcement. I blushed at how many people arrived. Then it started. The Officer began to talk about how I saved Edward and how I was a good role model. I looked into the crowd. Many familiar faces popped up: the other migrants! “We are all very thankful for this child who have saved Edward!” the officer announced. Suddenly, I saw someone pushing forwards from the back of the crowd. Could it be? When her sweetest voice shouted my name, I knew I found her again! I dashed down the stairs and we ended up in each other’s arms. All of a sudden there was a blinding flash and the “Click!” of a camera. Then I fell down, unconscious. I sat in front of my MacBook doing my writing homework. As I reached for my library book: ‘Tales Of Old Shanghai’, a folded sheet of ripped, yellowed newspaper fell out. I picked it up and saw a black and white photo with two familiar faces. It was my mum and I, holding each other’s arms and crying with joy. “Little Hero Rescues Edward Jones!” was the title of the news and the date of the newspaper was September 19 th 1937.
