New Tales of Old Shanghai
Stewards Pooi Kei Primary School, Wong, Charis – 11
O
nce upon a time, in old Shanghai, there was a boy called Hin. Hin was a billionaire who owned a restaurant
in Joffre Avenue. One day, he was seduced by an elegant woman who was working for an evil company.
She asked Hin for money to heal her grandfather’s disease, which was a complete lie. Hin gave her money with no
regrets, but, on the day the woman said she was going to give back the money she borrowed from him, she didn’t
come. The boy was determined to get his money back, but a man, who came out of nowhere warned Hin not to
go or something bad would happen. Hin didn’t listen to the man so the man decided to go with Hin to save him
from danger.
Hin went to where he heard the crowd say that they had seen the woman- the district of Jing’an, and the man
patiently followed. They were traveling by rickshaw. It was not as far as Hin thought, just half an hour from the
city. Hin looked at the man’s face. The man was tall, he had a mustache and his hair was silver. “We’re here!” said
the rickshaw driver. Hin and the man got off from the rickshaw and looked around. They heard that the woman
worked at one of the biggest and renowned dance halls so they decided to go over there. To Hin’s surprise, when
they arrived, they saw the woman being forced out of a room by five man dressed in black. Hin watched as the
men walked away. He asked the woman to give him back his money. The woman started crying and said “I was
forced to work for a gang. They would have killed my mother if I didn’t reach the goal they gave me, so your
money isn’t with me anymore.“ Hin and the man with silver hair decided to find the gang and get the money
back so they took the woman with them, since she knew the way to find them.
They got back on a rickshaw and roamed past the streets. Hin quickly realized that he started liking Sin, the
woman.
In the evening, they decided to stop and look for a place to rest. Meanwhile, an armed man from the gang had
followed them and planned to kill Sin because she knew too much. While the three of them were heading to
Duolun street, the man followed. Suddenly, His heard a gunshot! The man with silver hair threw himself in front of
the woman as if he knew what was going to happen. As soon as the bullet hit him, the man with silver hair
disappeared into thin air without a sound. Hin shouted “Hey! Where are you?!” No one answered. After that, they
realized that the man who shot the gun was tied up and in his mouth was a piece of paper. His took it from his
mouth and looked at it. It was the map to the gang’s hiding place. His and Sin followed the map and found the
money. The gang was later caught by the police. Days later, Hin married Sin.
One day later, Hin looked into the mirror and he saw the man with the silver hair. He finally understood what
happened, so he said thank you. To himself.
