Crystal Necklaces and Letters Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School, Lok, Katie - 11 I t’s so pretty!’ ‘Oh my god.’ ‘ What should we do with it?’ We just had discovered an old necklace in the hotel room. It looked really ancient and old. It was the kind of thing you would expect royalty to wear back in the days. It was gold with a glistening blue crystal charm attached to it. Even though the gold chain looked a bit rusty and the some parts of the crystal had broke, it was still extremely valuable. Savanna spoke up. ‘ Do you think there’s still something in that drawer?’ She said, nodding towards the drawer where we found the necklace. I walked over to the drawer, slowly opening and peeking inside. At the corner of the drawer it looked like there was piece of folded paper. I took it out and held it out in front of my friends. ‘Open it!’ They yelled in unison. I slowly opened the yellowed piece of paper while the others watched with bated breath. I cleared my throat. ‘ My dearest Princess Rosie, I am extremely sorry for what happened last night. Please forgive me. I want and need a second chance. If you permit me this, please come and meet me at The Bund tonight at 8:00. Love, Harry.’ I read. ‘ Should we go to The Bund?’ I ask. ‘Why? I mean, yeah we might find something more but why are we even doing this?’ Jade asked. ‘ Well it’s not everyday when you an extremely valuable necklace and letter in your hotel room. We can find out who they are and stuff about the necklace,’ Savannah scoffed at Jade. I shook my head, ‘ We’re going.’ I confirm. ‘ Okay I did some research on The Bund. Turns out that this place has been in Shanghai for a long time and it was built for Princess Rosie and the love of her life, Harry.’ Savanna said. We arrived at The Bund. My eyes widened. ‘ That’s the person who wrote the letter! Harry wrote it to Rosie!’ I said. ‘ How are you sure?’ Savanna asked. ‘ Well, the letter clearly says ‘ Princess Rosie’ and I’m pretty sure we found it in Shanghai.’ ‘ She does have a point. So that’s one mystery solved. What about the necklace?’ Jade asked. We stayed silent for a while, not sure what to say. It’s not like we can just search for “Ancient Crystal Necklaces”’. Just then an idea dawned on me. We could ask Savanna’s Grandmother! I quickly turned to the girls and told them my idea. They agreed, and we headed over to her Grandmother’s apartment. Her smile widened when she saw us, showing her silver tooth. She dressed oddly, in bright colours and a fancy hat with flower in it. Her house also smelled like soup and dumplings, I noticed, delighted. ‘My beautiful girls.’ She said, interrupting my train of thought. Welcome. Come in. Come in.’ I gave her a warm smile before stepping in her home. ‘Grandma can you please tell us how Shanghai was like back then?’ Savanna asked. Savanna’s grandma told us a story of the history of Shanghai. It was detailed and interesting and colourful. From what she told us, you could tell that old Shanghai was an amazing place filled with excitement and danger and adventure. She told us about how their was a city wall built to protect the citizens from Japanese pirates; how the Japanese had invaded Shanghai, about the ceasefire that started in Shanghai; and much more. But nothing about a princess.
