THE SEASONAL EDIT

“ I grew up by a wood near Stroud . I felt its beauty , mystery and strength ” Abigail Edwards

This year , designer Abigail Edwards celebrates the 10th anniversary of launching her first range of wallpapers . Since then she ‘ s relocated from the city to the countryside , given birth to twin baby girls and published a book , Quiet Pattern . Its hand-drawn designs inspired by fairytales and nature have created a gentle stir .
Where does your inspiration come from ? In fairytales , there ’ s a balance between gentle romance and the depth of a darker edge . I am interested in this pared-back , ancient version of nature taking over . Now I live back near the wood I grew up by and it draws me in every day .

How has your love of pattern evolved over time ? I used to think pattern was garish , loud and unnecessary . I see my drawings as extensions of my sketchbook , one of the reasons I draw everything by hand . I like my designs to retain imperfection and character . My respect and love for pattern has totally changed and is continually growing .
What does Quiet Pattern mean ? Pattern can be soothing and calm without being depressingly beige and nondescript . It can increase a sense of wellbeing in a room . It grounds the space by adding atmosphere and transporting you to gentler surroundings .
Do you have tips for using pattern at home ? Only use patterns you love . Never think ” that will do “ if you aren ’ t sure about something . If you use pattern on a wall , have plain upholstery – every pattern needs space to breathe .
