A simple paper floral
wreath (tutorial on my
blog www.akadesign.
ca) and a vintage
frame gave this deer
added presence.
The paper floral
wreath almost looks
like a winning horse’s
garland of roses
received at a derby!
add a few bird
cages/houses.
Balance the height of
the cages across the
mantel. My bird cages
came from various
sources. Fill each one
with faux flowers, moss
balls or vintage books.
Hang some bunting
on the front of
the mantel. Burlap,
find yourself a
stag head and
hang it. Real or fake,
expensive or not,
this piece adds rustic
charm to a mantel.
After much searching
for a decently priced
version, I ended up
finding this deer head
at home hardware
just before the
holidays last year.
fabric, paper or a
combination of these
materials will add
texture or whimsy
depending on what
style you choose. The
wreaths hung on my
mantel came from Etsy
and my own making
(tutorial on my blog

fill in the blank
spaces. Fill a bowl
with rocks from a
walk along the beach
and tuck in a candle
or two. Maybe add
a ceramic bird. The
key is to fill the space
without making it look
cluttered.
