H appy Fall! It seems like every fall, Mandy and I renovate a kitchen. We don’t plan on it, it just seems to happen. As I start to plan our Kitchen & Bath issue and peruse the newest products, I get an itch to renovate. I’m blessed with a wife that goes with the flow and says, “What’s next on our renovation list?” Having renovated kitchens for clients and myself, I can honestly tell you that the latter can bring more challenges. First of all, if you are renovating your home, you have to live through the reno! Sounds easy enough in an ideal world, but let’s see if you feel the same way after you’ve spent three weeks eating take-out and cooking out of a convection oven (which can only be compared to an Easy Bake Oven). Sure, the first week is all fun and games! “Love, what do you feel like having tonight? Who’s doing dishes? No one, as we don’t have anywhere to wash them! Styrofoam plates it is!” A reno project is like camping, but in this situation you’re hoping a fire won’t start! As the second week rolls around, you become a little more dissatisfied. You ponder what you would be doing if you had a kitchen, what you might be cooking up, then settle for more take-out and watch the newest episode of Scandal (or whatever else you’re binge watching!) instead of having to spend time doing dishes. Life is good! When the third week rolls around, that’s when it all goes awry! The cravings are now in full swing. You find yourself slowing down as you pass a neighbour’s house, looking in at their family eating a homemade meal. You peak over the fence as you hear a mother saying, “Kids, time for dinner! Come inside and wash up!” You ask the take-out restaurant for substitutions and additives to make your food taste homemade and realize that it’s never quite the same. The good news is, is that it’s all worth it. The first time you walk in and the last piece of the puzzle has been added, you realize that your dream has come to life! It’s sort of like having a baby; by the time the second one rolls around, you have forgotten about all the sleepless nights and just remember how pretty they were when they were born. By the way, the newest addition to our family, our sweet baby girl, Ella arrived August 2nd, 2015 at 1:46 pm. Thank you to everyone who extended well wishes and support over the past few months as we adjusted to being new parents.
