Jane Lockhart Its height, which makes it a very dramatic space. CHT Why did you decide to use two different counter tops within the space? JL It looks more custom and allows the homeowner to have two, different looks.  Jane Lockhart The island is granite; the back counter top is quartz ; allowing the homeowner to have two different types of work surfaces. CHT What is your favourite material to use in a kitchen? JL Granite, but I also love the bleached blonde hardwood, which we have not seen in a long time. It looks modern when combined with the dark brown. CHT Can you offer words of wisdom to readers looking to re-design their kitchen this fall? JL Hire a professional! Kitchen design is more complex than it ever used to be with so many appliances and details that you have to know.  Pick your appliances first, then cabinetry.  Also, understand your budget.
