Gorgeous, functional kitchens and serene bathrooms. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY FOR DEALING WITH CHALLENGES? Problem-solving is more easily accomplished if you avoid overreacting when you first encounter a challenge. There are millions of details that go into the building of a home. A methodical approach to “roadblocks” always works best: step away from the situation, gather information and consider all the options. As they say, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Oftentimes what initially feels like a major issue turns out to be totally insignificant, especially when compared with all the elements involved in building a new home. ways with the “vision” in mind. After completion, the day-to-day relationship goes away; that is the saddest and hardest part. The only solace is that through our mutual efforts—through teamwork—we are able to turn that vision into reality. The result is an amazing, beautiful home. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? Seeing the client get excited as we complete milestones. These happen more and more often as we approach the end of the project and everything starts to really come together. In the end, all the apparent stress disappears; we hand over the keys; the family moves in; and the blueprints, artist renderings, building materials and countless hours of hard work turn into a home. TELL US ABOUT ONE OF THOSE “MOMENTS” IN BUILDING WHERE CLIENT APPRECIATION IS SHOWN. Last year we did a “cosmetic remodel”— where we don’t move too many walls or add space but just give the home a “face-lift.” My client is a wonderfully worldly woman, and she just wanted to freshen up her home. Her work takes her away for several months, so we communicated mostly through emails, phone and texting. Although we only “freshened” two bathrooms, refinished the floors and painted throughout, I will never forget the day she came home to the reveal. The look on her face has been etched in my memory forever. She was so happy—overcome with emotion—and she actually looked like a new person herself. A couple months later, I received another wonderful memory from that same client: a text message that thanked us for the heated floors in her amazing new master bathroom. It was something so simple for us but meaningful to her. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? That’s easy: the end! It’s truly a love/hate moment at the end. We create friendships throughout the project that at times may even seem like love/hate relationships, but when everything is said and done, it’s difficult to part ways. We have seen each other day in and day out. We’ve worked together. We’ve sometimes struggled together—al- /oursouthbay oursouthbay.com 99
