The home, a mid-century modern sitting high on a hill, has a wonderful view from the family room; however, a wall blocked the view from the kitchen. The client’s desire for ample workspace and a more open environment meant the dividing wall would be removed. This involved major structural work, but the resulting space was worth the effort. As with so many older homes, divided spaces are not compatible with our current, more casual lifestyles. The new space was designed to allow the clients to enjoy each other’s company while including anyone involved in the food preparation. The cabinetry was selected to reflect the simple style of mid-century modern, emphasizing the beauty of the wood grain. Dark quartz counters and dark accessories add balance to the room, while the hood accents the wonderful openness of the high ceiling. The flooring installed in the entire new space emphasizes the oneness of the room, while rugs and furniture groupings maintain an awareness of the functions of each area. And everyone can now enjoy the view!
