BURGHAUSEN- Exceptional experiences and world’ s longest castle

Burghausen, the“ pearl of the Salzach”, located 100 km east of Munich and 50 km north of Salzburg, attracts visitors with the world’ s longest castle.“ Extra large” doesn’ t just describe the castle in Burghausen- it also applies to the many opportunities available to visitors in Burghausen: with its unique architecture and its wide range of cultural and recreational opportunities known far beyond the immediate region, the town on the Salzach promises numerous highlights with unforgettable experiences.
WORLD’ S LONGEST CASTLE AND ROMANTIC HISTORIC DISTRICT
The walls, battlements, towers, and chapels of the world’ s longest castle( 1,051 m) seem to extend without end along the narrow mountain crest, nestled between the Wöhrsee, a natural swimming lake, and the River Salzach, the border with Austria. The castle in Burghausen is a testament to the over 1,000 year-old history of the town and is the centerpiece of any visit to Burghausen. The viewing platform on the roof affords one-of-a-kind panoramic views. The historically listed old part of town is a colorful ensemble with the town square, one of the most beautiful squares in Central Europe, and the Grüben, a promenade, rich in contrasts, against a backdrop of colorful, mostly-late Gothic houses. You can learn fascinating and amusing information about the history of the town and its Bavarian dukes on a public castle tour. These tours take place every Saturday, Sunday, and holidays at 11:00 am and at 2:00 pm. Information and registration: Burghausen Tourist Office.
Insider tip: barge ride on the Salzach
A barge ride on the Salzach shows the town from one of its most beautiful perspectives. The barges are replicas of medieval „ plätten“- salt barges- that were used to transport this „ white gold“ from Hallein in Salzburg to Burghausen. After boarding in Tittmoning or Raitenhaslach, you glide gently through the magical landscapes of Salzach valley. As you enter Burghausen, an unforgettable motif reveals itself before your eyes: The mighty castle enthroned like a protective bastion above the picturesque old city. Special highlights include musical barge rides, for example with jazz or Bavarian folk-dance music, or for the first time this year, cruises with interesting stories about the barge era: Stage actor Anton Krauss brings figures from the history of barge traffic on the Salzach back to life. Towmen, salt workers and ship builders tell of horrific accidents, opulent celebrations and the normal everyday life of the“ little” people along the Salzach.
