To the north of the city

MARIA PLAIN
The hill upon which Maria Plain stands is an ideal place to enjoy a panoramic view of the Salzburg countryside as well as the city of Salzburg itself. Several routes lead to this pilgrimage site, located at the end of the Stations of the Cross. The miraculous painting in the basilica( 1657), depicting Mary with the baby Jesus, was rescued unharmed from a church fire in a Bavarian town. The church was built by Giovanni Antonio Dario between 1671 and 1674. Mozart’ s Coronation Mass was first performed here. www. bergheim-tourismus. at
Oberndorf
The Silent Night Memorial Chapel, built in 1937 on the original site of the parish church where this famous Christmas song was first performed in 1818, is a must for visitors coming to Oberndorf for the very first time. In Oberndorf, Josef Mohr, who wrote the words to the song, worked as an assistant priest. www. stillenacht-oberndorf. at Also worth seeing is the Shipping Museum.
BERNDORF
Even centuries ago, in around 1700, Berndorf was also a much-visited pilgrimage destination, where people hoped for help and protection from the“ Radiant Madonna”. In the 19th cent., Franz Xaver Gruber, the composer of“ Silent Night”, was a teacher here. If you wish to retrace the story of this song, you will also enjoy visiting the house where the composer was born located in the Innviertel community of Hochburg.

The baroque drama of Rottmayr’ s paintings can be encountered again in the museum at Mattsee Abbey. The“ Goliath”, one of the highest church steeples far and wide at 76 meters, dominates the Mattsee skyline. The former Benedictine abbey was founded in 777, an early Gothic structure that was later remodeled in the style of the Baroque. The abbey museum houses sacred artworks and a portrait collection.
