GALLERY IN THE TRAKLHAUS
The gallery in the birthplace of Georg Trakl on the Waagplatz serves as a publicly financed institution promoting Salzburg artists in a national and international context. It has developed into a wellknown and prized exhibition venue for Austrian and international artists. Eight to twelve exhibits are organized annually in the four rooms on ca. 200 m 2. This year, a gilded manhole cover, the „ SoS GATE“ by Czech artist Robert Jelinek, points to the gallery’ s artistic message. In the entrance area is an installation by award-winning sculptor Gunda Gruber. „ Mit Zähnek lappern und dampfenden Grüßen, Dein G.“ is a spatial piece dedicated to Trakl. The summer exhibition“ gesammelt”, drawn from the studios and homes of artists, casts light on what artists themselves collect, buy, or exchange, and runs until 10.8.
On display are also graphic works, pictures, and sculptures by Franz Josef Altenburg, Irene Andessner, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Wolfgang Becksteiner, Günter Brus, Gunter Damisch, Jakob Gasteiger, Franz Graf, Martin Gredler, Anna Heindl and Manfred Wakolbinger, Matthias Herrmann, Ursula Hübner, Bernd Koller, Ingeborg Lüscher, Andrew Phelps, Annerose and Alois Riedl, and Christian Schwarzwald. Each piece in the collection is presented right next to another, hung in so-called“ Petersburg” style.
The individual collections can thus be recognized as such. In cooperation with the International Academy for Fine Arts starting 16.8., Mara Mattuschka, as well as a group exhibition by artists from Australia to El Salvador, are exhibited under the title „ Drawing the World“ starting 16.8. in collaboration with Galerie Ernst Hilger. Autumn focuses on the motto „ Salzburgers in Vienna“, a show made up of works by Salzburg artists currently in the collections of the city of Vienna. www. traklhaus. at

GALERIE ALTNÖDER DISPLAYS JOSEF KARL RÄDLER
A sensational attic find made this possible: For the second time, Galerie Altnöder in Salzburg presents the works of Josef Karl Rädler: photos from 1900 from the „ madhouses“ as they were called at the time. Rädler( 1844-1917) came from Bohemia to Vienna, where he established an international, highly renowned business as a porcelain painter. At the age of 50, his family first had him committed to Vienna‘ s „ Pilgerhain“ asylum, and later to „ Mauer-Öhling“ near Amstetten. They allowed him to paint in these institutions, simply content whenever the „ laughing philosopher“ or the „ apostle of humanity“, as Rädler called himself, didn‘ t bother the other patients with his lectures on peace, health, and women‘ s rights. Rädler‘ s pictures, created from tempera and Indian ink on paper, mostly show scenes from the everyday life in asylums. Rädler often added his own sayings to the back side of his pictures. An estimated 850 pieces were saved from the garbage in the 1960‘ s when renovations were done in „ Mauer-Öhling“. Professor Leo Navratil in Gugging was the first to publish them, and Landesmuseum Niederösterreich exhibited them in 1994. Today, Rädler‘ s pictures are represented in important, as well as international collections. At Altnöder, they can be seen from July 20 to September 14. Heidi and Ferdinand Altnöder have specialized in contemporary art from Austria in their gallery for 28 years. They are located in the heart of the historic district of Salzburg at Sigmund Haffner- Gasse 3 / 1st floor. Represented in the gallery program are established as well as young artists. The collection ranges from Gerhard Rühm, Oswald Oberhuber, Otto Eder, who have made outstanding achievements since the 1950‘ s, to Alois Mosbacher, and Johanna Kandl, and the young scene with Christian Eisenberger. One specialty of the gallery is an intensive focus on the world-famous illustrator Alfred Kubin( 1877-1959). Art brut, the art of outsiders( including Gugging), is another highlight of the gallery. www. galerie-altnoeder. com

Galerie Welz
This summer is immersed in the works of Pablo Picasso. From 19.7. to 31.8., the graphic works and ceramics of the Catalan are united at the Welz. The oldest of Salzburg‘ s galleries, the foundation of the Welz is the activities of art dealer and collector Friedrich Welz, who took over the picture frame shop from his father in 1934 and established his career as a gallery owner with an exhibition in which he showed works by Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, and Kubin. The gallery was and remains a place for various movements in Austrian and international modernity; works that today all belong to the art of classic modernism. There is a special bond with artists of the so-called „ Salzburger Kreis“, including members Max Peiffer-Watenphul, Herbert Breiter, Eduard Bäumer, Rudolf Hradil, etc.- whose works are still admired even long after their death. Under the direction of Hubert Lendl, the focus was shifted to German and Austrian expressionism, the work of Austrian sculptors and painters after 1945, international graphic prints, and painted Japanese woodcuts. The gallery is also a platform for predominately Austrian contemporary art. You can also find the oeuvre of internationally successful Gottfried Salzmann, a native of Salzburg living in Paris. A major retrospective will be dedicated to him in late autumn from 29. 11. 2013 to 4.1.2014. The art bookstore there, where you can find many publications from their own publishing house, also offers a wide selection. During festival season, there are extended opening times: Mon-Fri 9:30 am to 7 pm, Sat 9:30 am to 5 pm, Sun 10 am to 1 pm. www. galerie-welz. at

Near Galerie Welz is the Museum der Moderne Rupertinum, which as of 2013 has been around for 30 years. The Rupertinum is part of MdM Salzburg and also the predecessor of the institution on the Mönchsberg. In summer 2013, two photography exhibits are presented: until 22.9 Matthias Herrmann will be showing his newest series of still-life photography and pictures of urban areas. The exhibition series „ Window on the Collection“ also focuses on still-life photography from early works in the 1920‘ s to current ones under the title „ Magic of Objects“. This summer, MdM Mönchsberg is all about flowers and mushrooms. „ Flowers and Mushrooms“( 27.7. to 27.10.) addresses the different levels of meaning and symbolism of plants and mushrooms. Austrian Hubert Scheibl deals with the ambivalence of nature and our existence in it with his painting „ Plants & Murders“( 20.7. to 20.10.). You will find Galerie Seywald, not on the Mönchsberg, but at the foot of the Rainberg.
