THE COUNTERPOINT

B.D. GALLOF

In talking to a few people about the NY Islanders predicament, despite that they are unhappy and dissatisified with the results of the first 24 games, they have made a few counterpoints...

1. In regard to firing the coach, they cite this is the same coach who helped lead them to that strong second half and who did not look out-of-place under the white-hot light of the playoffs versus the Penguins. Seems to be reticence to make coach walk plank here.

2. Cite injuries to two KEY players. Both Visnovsky and Vanek have only played 8 games apiece.

3. The belief is that with players getting healthy this team will get itself out of the hole.

4. Don't believe that nothing is being attempted to improve the team. However fact is: Very hard to make a deal or move that is not overpayment or that will yield desired results. Team will not hurt longterm future and IS NOT panicking.

5. Team stands behind Moulson for Vanek deal, something I wrote about that they were trying to get a player like this for years. Moulson/Vanek trade is not what has led to 24 game yeild.
