Even with the disruption of the COVID situation , some fun and competitive tennis was able to be experienced by most of our HNHS players during in the Hawke ’ s Bay Inter-School Tennis competition – three senior girls ’ teams and one junior girls A grade team . Unfortunately , the inter-school boys grade competition was not able to go ahead due to lack of entries . To compensate for this the HNHS boys ’ tennis championship was reinstated . It was disappointing that both competitions could not be completed due to the New Zealand Covid lock down .
On a more encouraging note , the Tawa College annual school exchange took place on Monday 2nd March . The weather behaved itself as eleven HNHS players contested some closely fought matches . Tawa College came out the overall winners , but the players enjoyed the competitive environment and the positive relationships they formed with their opposition .
Later the same week , nine HNHS students entered the Inaugural Derek Ward Secondary School Tennis Tournament . The team participants were : Albert van Niekerk , Rafael Pattersson , James Wicken , Asher Riley , Louie Farrier , Gabor Ladanyi , Harriet White , Holly Bay championship for seeded secondary school players and was a thoroughly worthwhile experience for the more than 60 players who competed . Results included : Rafael Patterson – Third in the Junior Boys Competition Holly Andrews – Winner of the Junior Girls Consolation Competition Asher Riley – Runner up in the Senior Boys Consolation Competition
Tuesday . The A grade teams are made up of mixed , seeded pairs . There is also a junior B grade competition on Tuesdays . The feedback on this new format has so far been positive . I believe that a similar format will be used for senior and junior competitions in 2021 .
