BADMINTON - SENIOR GIRLS
Back Row : Holly Evans , Brianna Evans , Ian Johnson ( Coach ) Front Row : Yachna Sookdev , Linda Gee ( Captain ), Rani Williams
This year we had only three teams and 16 players involved . The decrease in teams and players can be attributed to the lack of international students as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic .
Girls A : Linda Gee ©, Holly Evans , Brianna Evans , Rani Williams , Yachna Sookdev .
HBSS COMPETITION : 1st place A Grade . Matches Played : 8 Won : 8 Lost : 0 Games Won : 45 Games Lost : 3
For the third year in a row , we dominated this grade . The only real competition came from Napier Girls us was the strength we had from player one to player like to acknowledge the contribution she has made not only as a player but also as a coach / mentor for her teammates . Her involvement , skill and input will be sorely missed .
Girls C : Elena Kim , Shannon Sawyers ©, Zoe Niblett , Whaingaroa Collier-Rapaea , Eden Read-Butcher , Eden Coburn .
4th place C Grade . Matches Played : 10 Won : 6 Lost : 4 Games Won : 36 Games Lost : 26
Despite four of the players never having played before , the decision was made to still enter them in C Grade . This proved to be a good call as they were competitive in all matches apart from those against Wairoa A and William Colenso A . Their most exciting matches were against Taradale which they drew three all but lost on points differential . This happened twice ! The players all appeared to enjoy the season and made considerable improvement to their skill level .
Girls D : Monet Maugham ©, Alice Lu , Emily Hinton , Grace Dalziel , Alexis Ormond .
3rd place D Grade . Matches Played : 9 Won : 7 Lost : 2 Games Won : 37 Games Lost : 17
For a group new to badminton , this was an excellent result . Their most exciting game was against Karamu B1 which they drew three all , but won on points 171- disappointing , but understandable as two players could not play due to illness . The girls all improved considerably and should all be capable of playing C Grade in 2021 .
HBSS SINGLES TOURNAMENT Despite COVID-19 , badminton was one of the few sports to still run a tournament this year . It was also pleasing to see better communication from Badminton Hawkes Bay and not run tournaments during our examination week . Eleven players from Havelock North High School took part along with players from Napier Girls ’ High School , Taradale High School , Napier Boys ’ High School , Hastings Boys ’ High School , William Colenso College and St Johns College . We provided players in the boys and girls draw from A Grade to C Grade . All players enjoyed some success , but our best results were :
Linda Gee – 2nd place Girls A Grade Holly Evans – 3rd = place Girls A Grade
