Surfing Success Across The Country
Students from the Havelock North High School surfing team have succeeded in competitions around the country in 2022 . In October , there were several notable performances . Supportive parents and whanau were vital in powering the school ’ s surf team to their participation and successes . Special thanks goes to Nigel Prins , Francois Sneedon , Gary Broad , Tina Burbury and Nick Vial for giving up their time , effort and expertise for the team . Also , thanks to the Prins family for the use of their bach in Mahia . In Term 1 , the team were hindered from travelling up to Mahia by a storm washing out the main route , so headed to local beaches for some big wave experience . In Term 3 , we made it to Mahia and surfed on beaches in Gisborne and Mahia . These trips helped prepare the team for the competitions ahead . The team captains this year were Evan Broad and Isla Prins .
New Zealand Scholastics Champs - Two semi finalists & two quarter finalists :
During the second week of the holidays , the New Zealand National Scholastics championships were held in Taranaki . Seven of the ten Hawke ’ s Bay team members attend HNHS . Two surfers particularly excelled in their age groups at this event , both Evan Broad And Isla Prins finished up in the semi finals in their respective age groups . Evan was in 2nd place in his semi with 30 seconds left of 25 minutes . This would ’ ve put him in the final . Unfortunately , a Northland surfer snuck through to claim 2nd place . These results put both Isla and Evan in at least the top eight for their age group in Aotearoa / New Zealand . Luca Broome and Patrick Burbury also reached the quarter finals in their respective grades . These are fantastic achievements for these surfers and the Hawke ’ s Bay Boardriders Club .
Aotearoa National Maori Surfing Champs - Silver medalist :
More recently , Dale Cromhout competed in the Aotearoa National Maori Surfing Championships where he fought his way to a second place finish in his U16 age group . Francois Sneedon ( Hawke ’ s Bay BoardRiders team coach ) told us , “ Dale came within a hair ’ s breadth of taking it out . He was leading the final up until the last 10 seconds .” Congratulations to Dale .
More Silver Medals : There was more success in the U16 age group over the Labour Weekend at the interclub comp , hosted by Gisborne Boardriders , where Year 11 Student Harry Prins managed to secure second place finish in the U16s . At that same contest , Isla Prins also grabbed second in the open women ’ s division .
Hawke ’ s Bay Secondary School Champs : With the amount of talent being displayed by these students , the upcoming Hawke ’ s Bay High School championship in November will be one to watch . There is the potential for Havelock North High School to bring back the school cup for the second year in a row .
