Our Friday after-school training sessions produced good turnouts , regardless of the weather . The effort came to fruition with the boys dominating the local competitions and finishing third in the NZSS champs . The team coach was grateful that team leaders , Lorcan and Karsen , would willingly forgo their last period of school to put controls out . The girls also won the top school in Hawke ’ s Bay . The Hawke ’ s Bay championships saw Lorcan Rabbitte defeat Karsen Vesty in senior boys for the only win , while James Wallace and Amy Nicoll both had seconds in their intermediate classes . Next up were the relays , with wins to both the senior and junior boys .
The sprint at EIT saw wins in all boys ’ grades ; Lorcan Rabbitte , senior , Thomas Potts , intermediate , and Elvies Kim in junior . The NZSS champs were held in the Counties area with some top performances in big fields . Best individual performance was in the sprint at Colin Mountford Park by junior , Elvies Kim , who ran second . Max Franks was 9th in the same class , while 7th placings were achieved by Lorcan Rabbitte in senior and Lily Beale in junior . In the farmland / forest map the next day for the long course , best result was Max Franks in junior with his 4th , with Elvies Kim , 7th . Other top 10 finishes were from Lorcan and Lily again who both finished 10th . The boys had great success in the standard grades with Arya Chebbi , junior , Joseph Duff , intermediate and Owen Reid , senior , all winning . Finally , the relays saw Elvies Kim , James Maxwell and Max Franks win the junior boys race .
Rogaine
The offshoot of orienteering is Rogaining . This is a cross country navigation event where a team of two to five can accumulate as many points as they can in a set time period . The HBSS rogaine was an urban event held in Havelock North with HNHS teams winning five of the six titles . Four teams were then sent to the NZSS champs , hosted in Taranaki in very wet conditions . All four gained podium finishes ; Cameron White and Nathan Rae won the intermediate boys race over six hours , while second places were awarded to Amy Nicoll and Jacob Lawrence ( six hour intermediate mixed ), Elvies Kim , James Maxwell and Max Franks ( three hour junior boys ), and Lily Beale and Stella Buczynski ( three hour junior girls ).
