this transformation was in developing our school ’ s identity . Mr Fenton knew that when he first stepped foot in the school back in 2012 . Similarly , he knew how important it was for our young sports people to be able compete in uniforms that proudly identified them as part of Havelock North High School . I mention the uniform because it is an example of how over the last 10 1 / 2 years Mr Fenton has worked tirelessly towards achieving his vision for the school . I hope that today , Mr Fenton , you are able to look around and feel as proud as we do about the school to which we all belong and the one you have led so well . On a practical level , I appreciate the amount of work you have done behind the scenes to develop the standard of the teaching spaces across of our school campus . This is not easy work . In 2012 , our 100 block was a patchwork assortment of dark and dank teaching spaces and corridors . The maths and English departments were similarly dated . Through your hardwork , focus and commitment to giving every student and teacher the best resources possible , we now have a vastly improved school campus – places that teachers want to teach . Buildings are an example of the work that principals do behind the scenes . For most students I am sure it is hard to imagine the amount of time and energy this takes in a political climate where money is tight . But this is the work that ensures we all have the best environment in which to teach and learn . And while there are many markers you could consider when assessing the work of a principal – I would argue that there is one that matters most . That is whether the school you lead is a place teachers ’ want to work . Everything else aside – the most impact a school leader can have on young people like yourselves is to make sure you are surrounded by the best teachers possible . In this regard , Mr Fenton , you have also succeeded . This is , without question , a school that teachers want to be part of .

I hear that in my conversations with staff , the commitment we show to our subjects , our houses , activities outside the classroom and the collegiality I feel everyday in the staffroom and around the school . I hear it people hoping to join the HNHS staff from all corners of the globe . There is no better indicator of your work than this . Teachers want to be here . For most students however , I am sure , the thing you will remember most is the contact you have had with Mr Fenton around the school grounds during break times , on the sidelines of sports matches or at a performances or concerts . I will let Lola and Thomas talk about this more but these aspects of Mr Fenton ’ s leadership is equally valued by us as teachers . On behalf of the staff I would like to express our appreciation of your involvement and willingness to support teachers across every arm of the school . In our classrooms , we have felt supported to deliver the curriculum and to maintain high expectations of our students . As teachers in charge of sport , music , drama and we have felt supported with you on the sidelines or backstage offering words of encouragement . From the E grade rugby team of 2017 to myself personally and the many other teachers and senior leaders you have mentored and coached over the years , I would like to say a final thank you . Your leadership has left a legacy at schools across NZ and none more so than here at HNHS . Mr Fenton - you have walked and talked our school motto over the last 10 1 / 2 years and I hope you carry this with you when you and Mrs Fenton depart at the end of the year to enjoy a long and happy retirement .
