The boys first XI football team performed at a very high level throughout the season despite having to face multiple setbacks over the year . The team was built up with a mix of older and experienced players as well as a good young core coming through . We lost a lot of key players from previous years which we had to replace and the players that came in performed admirably given the holes they were trying to fill . We had the tough job of playing catchup with the other big schools in the region like Lindisfarne and Napier Boys ’ High School but the boys put up a good fight to stay in the mix right to the end of the season .
We started the season well with a standout 12-0 win over Taradale and we ended up finishing third place in the league . We finished on 12 points from eight games as we were unable to play the final two games due to Taradale and Hastings Boys ’ pulling out . We travelled down to Palmerston North to play Tawa in the exchange where we scored early on but were unable to hold out , falling to a 5-1 defeat in the end . The boys played well but we were missing some key players whose presence were missed . We also played in the Trident Secondary School Tournament in Whanganui where we went unbeaten on our way to winning the trophy . We conceded no goals throughout the whole tournament , only conceding one penalty in two shootouts on our way to the title . After a tense nil all game in the final , the deciding penalty went to George Field who slotted it to win the tournament in emphatic fashion . Standout performances included Jack Albertini and Henry Morgan in the defence , Angus Dykes and Eden Floyd in the midfield and Reuben Crossland who proved to be a constant threat on the wing . I ’ m super proud of the team ’ s performance this year and wish the boys all the best for their futures in the sport . Also a big thank you to Mr Russell who coached us this year and whose insight and knowledge of the sport was a huge asset to the team .
