STAFF NOTES

The King is ……… retired , long live the King (?)
Havelock North High School , and New Zealand , finally learned what the hype was about when a certain C word ripped through the school late in March and stuck around for the rest of the year . A special acknowledgement to Mrs Hayes for single-handedly keeping the virus in our midst at the time of writing .
In January , a lifetime ago , a fine and Prestidgeous bunch of new recruits were Russelled up to put on a teaching Potae . One of them we had Read about before . One Brown-noser took over the rugby team , whilst another gingerly took over the football boys ’ First XI . Although Steve deserves a medal , Lachlan and his team actually won one at tournament week .
Kauri House led the staff powhiri and did well until Mr Murfitt tried too hard to extoll that house ’ s virtues and a certain member of Rata gleefully used the whakatauki . ‘ Kāore te kumara e kōrero mō tōna ake reka ’. However , the blue kumara tasted sweeter than the red by the end of the year . Fittingly , the orange kumara tasted sweetest , however Miro would surely admit that the loss of swimming sports and athletics made it an unrepresentative Patu competition . The writer of this piece is not biased at all .
We ran into Technology issues with the sad departures of Jo Pearson and Suzie Newman but gained Amanda Smith . On a technological note , the 300 block has been transported from 1975 to 2022 by a huge renovation project and purchase of furniture . Brownyn and Joel have been quite legendary on this front . The writer of this piece is not biased at all .
A gentleman never tells , but someone on the staff with a prominent role turned 70 , and someone else with a prominent voice and physique turned 50 , someone with a rugby related name turned 40 and Lance turned 21 .
Kojak was appointed Deputy Principal for 2023 . However , he has publicly announced ( or I have ) that he will continue to make BRN coffee every morning . Luckily all of his hair has already fallen out . And the drummer from Golden Horse was promoted to Principal . Good luck to them .
Of course , the biggest event of the year was the departure of Lynne Fenton , legend of tennis , careers and P . E ., and her husband , who has contributed so much to the school in that last 11 years and massively raised the quality of the whole school and its profile in the community . The hard work and emotional strain of his job has been enormous and the whole staff will always appreciate what he has done for us and the students throughout that time .
