Thirty-three players represented Havelock North High School in the Term 1 Hawke ’ s Bay Secondary School Tennis competition . The school fielded six senior and one junior A grade team , as well as three senior and one junior B grade team . The A grade competition consisted of two players per team and took place on Monday after school . A number of our highly ranked junior students played in the senior competition . Using a format introduced at the end of last year , most teams now play in a mixed competition . However , due to the strength of our ranked male players , an A grade boys section was run to provide them with consistent games . The following teams were placed runners-up in their respective grades : James Wicken and Yachna Sookdev ( Senior A Grade : Division 2 ) and William Kersjes , George Field , Riley Carrington and Elle Lovatt ( Senior B Grade ).
On Wednesday 10th March , ten players represented HNHS at the Derek Ward Secondary School Tennis Tournament held in Napier . Team members were ; Albert van Niekerk , Holly Andrews , Asher Riley , Rafael Pettersson , Louie Farrier , Luchia Wynne-Lewis , James Wicken , Eva Pettersson and Rupert Heslop . Feedback from the players was very positive and it was pleasing that many of the top players in the Hawke ’ s Bay entered the tournament . This ensured the quality of the games was of a high level . Rafael and Louie were placed third and fourth respectively in the junior boys ’ competition . Fourth placings also went to Albert in the senior boys ’ competition , and Luchia Wynne-Lewis in the junior girls ’ division two competition .
Havelock North High School has entered two teams in the Term 4 Hawke ’ s Bay Junior Secondary School Competition ; one A grade , and one B grade team . These matches , and attendance at our Thursday afterschool training / practice sessions often provide some of our younger students with the opportunity to gain confidence and experience to take that next step to play in a more competitive arena .
I would especially like to thank the parents who have provided transport and supported our players over the course of the year . Without your help our students would be unable to represent HNHS in inter-school competitions .
