Orienteering continues to be one of our schools most successful sports . After the disappointing reduced season last year due to lockdown , orienteers enjoyed a full season in 2021 . Friday afternoon practices were again enjoyed . Once again , the boys dominated the local scene while the girls finished second by the narrowest margin . Four of the six sprint titles were won by school runners with Cameron Potts and Lily Stephens ( senior ) and James Wallace and Wyntah Green Thom ( junior ), winning their respective titles . On the long course , all won again bar Wyntah , with Amy Nicoll winning the junior title instead . HNHS took out another four titles in the relays . Cameron Potts , Lorcan Rabbitte and Karsen Vesty won the senior grade , Harry Prins , Nathan Rae and Cameron White won the intermediate , Sam Aplin , Joseph Duff and James Wallace won the junior and Mackenzie Speers , Lili Ganivet and Amy Nicoll won the junior girls grade .
The North Island SS champs were held in Manawatu with the highlight being the senior boys ’ relay team coming from behind to overcome favourites Westlake BHS in the last 50 metres to win . The team included Lorcan Rabbitte , Cameron Potts and Karsen Vesty . The best individual result was from Amy Nicoll in junior girls , earning silver on the long course , run in the forest at Waiterere Beach . The boys team finished second in the top school competition . Hawke ’ s Bay hosted the New Zealand SS champs , with two titles won . In an outstanding senior boys sprint at Splash Planet , Cameron Potts won , finishing in front of Karsen Vesty . Amy Nicoll made the podium finishing third , whilst Wyntah Green Thom was seven seconds back in fourth in the junior girls grade . Amy was again
79 on the podium on the long course , this time earning a silver medal , while Karsen Vesty and James Wallace both finished fourth . The other title won was in the junior girls relay where the team of Wyntah Green Thom , Mackenzie Speers and Amy Nicoll prevailed comfortably . Disaster struck the senior boys team , when dicing for the lead with Shirley Boys on the last leg , poor Karsen Vesty missed a control . Overall , the boys team finished third with the relay result costing them second in the Top School competition , as well as finishing third in the premier school competition .
