Every student in the Sports
Academy has a strength and conditioning programme which they aim to do twice per week . The goals of their individualised programmes are to : 1 . Improve athletic performance 2 . Reduce injuries 3 . Teach lifelong movement skills by working on correct technique
The winner of the JC Sports Academy Supreme Award for 2021 is Alex van Oeveren . Alex ’ s two favourite quotes are :
“ Success is the sum of all small efforts , repeated day in and day out ”
“ Mindset is what separates the best from the rest ”
Alex has achieved success in athletics , hurdles and pole vault . He is most proud of his bronze medal in the 100m hurdles at the NZ National Championships in 2019 . However , late last year he suffered a serious setback when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL ) and had to undergo knee surgery . He went from training five to six days a week to doing absolutely no sport in a matter of minutes . Alex has found the recovery process quite tough as it has been almost 11 months now and he is still not back to doing his full sport . However , he has been really disciplined with his rehabilitation exercises and has tried to stay as active as possible . This year Alex has also been coach of the HNHS Boys 2nd X1 hockey team . He plans and leads all their training sessions and goes to all their games . Alex says that the most important qualities in a coach are someone that is funny and someone that all the players are able to relate to .
Alex joined the Sports Academy as a Year 10 student enjoying the early morning strength and conditioning sessions . In a recent interview I asked Alex “ If you were talking to a group of junior students just starting out in the Sports Academy what would you say to them ?” Alex replied :
“ Stick with the training - you might not like it at first . However in the long run you will see the benefits in your sport . Too many students are conscious of what others think . They also do not see the point of yoga and mobility work . I need mobility for my hurdles and pole vault ”.
“ The best part of the Sports Academy is the end-ofyear event , having some fun , the physical challenges , the gymnastics , the trampoline park and the amazing race was pretty cool . Also the guest speakers and being able to hang out with all the other students who are interested in building their skills in the gym . However , you have to be determined to get better at your sport and to come to the gym at lunchtimes - the Sports Academy definitely shows who the dedicated students are !”
