LEADERS ’ REPORT

It has been an honour to be the Head Boy and Head Girl of our year group . Our final year at school has flown by so quickly and it has been exciting watching our fellow students develop a sense of individuality throughout this time . We knew Year 13 would strike us with an abundance of challenges , but having a cooperative leadership committee and an active community of students , teachers and whānau allowed us to fulfill our positions with ease .
2021 , along with 2020 , have been unusual years for everyone . With event cancellations and an uncertainty about the future , our leadership team had to come together and think ahead . This teamwork was strengthened at the beginning of the year on a leadership course run by Shane Green where he focused on the qualities and values of a successful team .
The start of the year commenced with Year 13 camp , which was a highlight for many students as it brought everybody together and prepared us well to be the new leaders of school . Camp was jam-packed with fun activities that challenged our ability to solve problems and developed trust within each house .
The beginning of the year began with the Year 9 pōwhiri . It was a delight to welcome new students into the school with karanga , waiata and haka , allowing them to experience the manaaki we uphold as a kura . Our house swimming and athletics competitions were just round the corner ; two main house point opportunities and a whole lot of fun for everyone that participated .
Open Evening was soon after and a great chance to show off our school to potential students and families .

The production Oliver was particularly special and , after many months of rehearsals , was a spectacular performance .
The lockdown challenge , which was created in 2020 , was passed down to the 2021 Forum Committee and the epic journey continued . We were lucky enough to raise $ 4370 for the mental health foundation with students and teachers covering a massive distance of 1120km over 12 hours . It was an extremely challenging day but all 22 involved gave their best effort .
Other house events included netball , football , kapa haka , multi events and cross-country which got a range of students with different strengths involved . Havestock and Matariki were both successful events which gave the musicianship and kapa haka students an opportunity to perform in front of a positive audience .
In August we had our school ball and annual sports exchange with Tawa College . At the time we talked about how lucky we were to participate in these events given the year of bad luck and event cancellations that came with Covid-19 . Little did we know we ’ d go into Level 4 lockdown that week . After this many events were cancelled and NCEA benchmarks became extremely important .
With the year coming to an end , the Year 13s are reflecting on their time at Havelock North High School , the opportunities they ’ ve had here , the amazing people they ’ ve met and the people they have become . But it ’ s time to take our next step and begin our next adventure in the big wide world .
