BASKETBALL - SENIOR GIRLS

Back Row : Rebecca Davis , Sophia Coram-O ’ Kane , Myla Groombridge , Teina Tuhi Front Row : Rakairoa Joyce , Hannah Estcourt , Alice Hinton , Agyeiwaa Tabi-Amponsah , Emily Herd
What started as a team that was put together at the last minute and initially thought they were playing in a social grade , soon became a team that found a way to gel together and string together an impressive run of wins during the middle section of the regular season . Teina Tuhi and Alice Hinton were both in their third season of playing for this team and were relied on for their experience . Emily Herd , Agyeiwaa Tabi-Amponsah and Rakairoa Joyce were consistent performers , making use of skills and understanding they had gained from other sports and applying them to the basketball court . Sophia Coram-O ’ Kane had returned after taking a year off and made use of her previous experience to help the team out . Myla Groombridge , Rebecca Davis and Hannah Estcourt , all beginners to the game , developed greater confidence as the season progressed . The team ’ s combined effort saw them come within one place of finishing in the top four - an amazing feat considering where they had come from at the start of the year !
Unfortunately , close losses against Flaxmere College and Napier Girls Senior B meant they had to win a do or die game against the eventual basketball Hawke ’ s Bay Secondary School Girls Division 2 winners , Wairoa College . A very slow start saw the girls down almost 20 points in the first quarter and a big hole to try and dig their way out of . While they fought admirably , the whole was too big and they lost by 10 points . Basketball Hawke ’ s Bay then split the division into the top four and bottom six . The girls comprehensively won their next game , scoring over 40 points and holding their Taradale Senior B opposition to zero !
However , lockdown then hit and Basketball Hawke ’ s Bay cancelled all games that were not top four games . It is safe to say that the girls were the 5th best team in the division and that they can be very proud of that result . A huge thanks must go out to Mrs Meagher for her support of the girls this season . Mrs Meagher has been a great supporter of HNHS basketball over the past three seasons and we are very thankful for her contributions .
