The Year 13 Encompass programme is designed to assist students to develop skills that will help them in their journey when they leave school . This year , students started by familiarising themselves with their pepeha - an essential part of their identity as young people from Aotearoa . Students then developed their understanding of teamwork and leadership before putting their skills to the test working with our new Year 9 students . This section of the programme concluded with a successful newspaper fashion show that tested both leadership and patience .
Throughout the year , most students participated in one of the ten school committees and several Encompass sessions were used by the committees to put into action the skills they had learned around organisation and leadership . Students were also guided through units addressing financial literacy , budgeting , study skills and car maintenance .
A new section introduced this year granted students the option to choose between a range of topics in a series of elective sessions . Topics included Brain Gym , Effective Communication , Employment Skills , Tips for Effective Tertiary Study , Managing Stress and Study Skills for Maths and Science .
We were fortunate to be able to host the Mates and Dates team who facilitated five sessions looking at healthy relationships and the concept of consent . Throughout the programme , students worked collaboratively to develop a campaign that was used to promote healthy relationships and awareness about the importance of consent within the school community .
Our programme concluded with two sessions where the Year 13 students reconnected with the Year 9 students to help them learn the school waiata and haka . The success of these sessions was evident in the final performance given by all of the students which shook the gymnasium rafters . Thank you to everyone who has been involved with the programme this year .
