‘CHARMING’ FINCHES PART TWO Following on from my article last month about attracting more birds into Millstream Fork, the resident squirrels that regularly raid food originally meant for birds got in on the act with my new bird feeders. Within a few weeks they were acrobatically dangling from these new feeders, gorging on a new and favourite food, making themselves pleasantly fat. There are times such as this when I must remind myself that Millstream Fork is not just a bird garden, but an animal feeding station where all wild animals are welcome. One of the two spectacularly coloured birds that I had aimed to draw into the wildlife garden was the goldfinch. It is by many people’s choice, Britain’s prettiest bird. Fortunately, it is not rare, and can be seen in gardens, fields and wasteland throughout the country. Even so, it needs a strategy to get them into the garden.
