‘CHARMING’ FINCHES
PART TWO
Following on from my article last month about attracting more birds into
Millstream Fork, the resident squirrels that regularly raid food originally
meant for birds got in on the act with my new bird feeders.
Within a few weeks they were acrobatically dangling from
these new feeders, gorging on a new and favourite food,
making themselves pleasantly fat. There are times such as
this when I must remind myself that Millstream Fork is not
just a bird garden, but an animal feeding station where all wild
animals are welcome.
One of the two spectacularly coloured birds that I had aimed to
draw into the wildlife garden was the goldfinch. It is by many
people’s choice, Britain’s prettiest bird. Fortunately, it is not
rare, and can be seen in gardens, fields and wasteland throughout the country. Even so, it needs a
strategy to get them into the garden.
