There can’t be many children who don’t long
to go to Disneyland. The very name conjures
up excitement and magic. We visited recently
with our 5 year old grandson. So what is it
like for the older generation?
From the moment we entered the park the
atmosphere was magical. First we walked
along Main Street USA - up ahead was
the Sleeping Beauty Castle which looked
amazing. The sidewalks are lined with
attractions and shops, and vintage cars drive
past. And there is a wonderful soundtrack
playing old American tunes.
As we reached the castle the street opened
out and there was a choice of routes. We
went through the castle into Fantasyland
where the rides are based on fairytales,
perfect for younger children. Flying elephants
(Dumbo), Peter Pan’s Flight and It’s a Small
World are some of the best.
The other choices are Adventureland,
Frontierland and Discoveryland. There are
height restrictions on some rides but many
are still suitable for little ones. Our 5 year old
seemed utterly fearless and was happy to go
on Big Thunder Mountain with his Mum. He
also loved Pirates of the Caribbean and the
Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast.
Although we visited in mid-August the
crowds were well managed. It’s possible to
avoid too much queuing by using the Fast
Pass system to book ahead for the popular
rides. And by eating our meals fairly early we
were served quite
quickly.
At 5-30 every day the
Disney Magic parade
took place along
Main Street. This was
absolutely wonderful
with an amazing
array of characters
and floats portraying
all the well known
Disney stories. The
magic was only
slightly dimmed by
the hundreds of
mobile phones being
held aloft by hundreds
of hands! The final float
carried Mickey Mouse,
right up high, waving a
wand and providing a
thrilling climax.
The music is the
thing that sets such a
marvellous atmosphere,
not only in the parade
but throughout the park. As we strolled
through the different areas, cleverly placed
loud speakers were playing appropriate
music setting the mood perfectly.
As we were with a younger child we decided
not to visit the Disney Studios which are next
to the park. These are largely based on the
making of the films, and would probably suit
older children.
There are several Disney themed hotels
where you can stay. We chose the Hotel
Cheyenne, mainly to keep my cowboy-mad
husband happy! The fa
