Theatre Review
‘A Journey
Through
Neverland’
at The Wycombe Swan Theatre
One of Buckinghamshire’s leading dance schools, Castle Street Dance Studios offers a
variety of lesson styles including Ballet, Tap, Modern and Street. The school welcomes
students from both ends of the scale, from those with serious dance ambitions to those
dancing purely for enjoyment. The inclusive, positive and energetic atmosphere was apparent
in the school’s recent production of ‘A Journey Through Neverland’ at The Wycombe Swan
on Saturday 17th September, and there was real joy to be found in seeing that all the age
groups - from the very young to the seniors - all clearly had a love of their dancing.
The Head Teacher, Jessica Clayton, was a student at CSDS for 14 years before taking over
the school last year from Charlotte Chan. Jessica studied Dance and Teacher Training at The
Centre, a performing arts college in Kent and has performed with the Royal New Zealand
Ballet.
The shows are put on every two years at The Swan, as well as smaller shows and dance
festivals regularly presented by students and teachers. The Swan is an impressive venue
seating over 1,000, and on the 17th September the auditorium was almost full for the 2pm
matinee performance. The sets, lighting, and costumes were all fantastic and really brought
the story to life. We really enjoyed the music choices too - mostly popular including a Justin
Timberlake number for the opening party scene (choreographed by Paula Buckland) and
Olly Murs for the huge finale (choreographed by
Johnny Schwezmann) involving every member
of the performance. It was lovely to see the little
ones’ faces as they experienced the big
crowd for the first time and spotted their
parents in the audience!
Classes are held in High Wycombe,
Penn & Tylers Green, and Widmer
End & Hughenden. Boys and girls
aged from 2 ½ to mature adults are
welcome. The school offers two free
introductory classes to new students wanting
to give dance a go and make sure Castle
Street Dance Studios is right for them.
