Pullingshill Wood is full of trenches, they twist and
turn through the trees, making the most remarkable
landscape. “And the reason for this” I hear you ask? It’s
an historical answer, one that dates back to when troops
stationed at nearby Bovingdon Green during the first
World War were taught how to dig and maintain trenches
in preparation for their time at the Western Front. The
area at that time was a common, devoid of trees, but
over the last 100 years beech and oak trees have grown
to create this wonderful woodland. It really is quite an
atmospheric setting.
The wood is now owned by The Woodland Trust and
Marlow Common is in the care of the Chiltern Society.
There isn’t an official car park as such but it is easy to
park close to the edge of the woods. We drove from
Marlow along the Frieth Road, past The Royal Oak pub
(which looks lovely for a drink and bite to eat by the
way), then turned left down Marlow Common, and then
left again down an unmarked lane (post code SL7 2QR).
We parked almost at the end of this lane on the right
hand side, just before the fork in the road.
At this time of year it’s the perfect place for kicking up
the crunchy Autumn leaves, or for toadstool hunting –
see if you can find an iconic red and white spotty one.
Hours of fun can be had walking up and down these
trenches, and fallen trees create unstable bridges, but it
all adds to the adventure.
