At the beginning of term I asked some of our younger gardeners what they would like
to grow this year. As always, the first answer back was a loud “Potatoes!”
Potatoes, the simplest thing to grow (thankfully) and the best thing to dig up. The garden
can be likened to opening time on Black Friday at Primark, or even sell-off day at Chelsea
when they ring that bell. Whichever you prefer really, but excitement is definitely in the air.
This month we are harvesting our leeks and I fear the excitement will not be as great.
They are small, very small. Spring Onion kind of small in fact. I had toyed with the
thought of passing them off as a new, and of course chic, “miniature” variety
but I’m not sure I can pull that off. I will have to confess that leeks are not
one of my strengths. I can only apologise if you have a child in my club
who brings you one solitary pencil thin leek to cook for tea.
Forgive me.
Finally, the club has been very lucky to receive a donation
from The Beaconsfield Community Association to help us
replace and renew many of the vital features
in our ever-growing garden. Gardening and the Great Outdoors are an
important part of school life here so a big thank you to them from us all.
