Ffolly Ffollowup
Ffifty Years later
Cheated of ffame and ffortune some ffifty years
ago, this local psychedelic sixties band refforms to create a new album on vinyl,
only to ffind technology has changed everything: not only recording techniques and
equipment but the way music is now accessed.
Three of the original four meet up and find the spark is well and truly still alive. In the intervening years,
lead guitar/vocals and writer, John Dunsterville has juggled his life between creating a business in GRP
technology and every aspect of music, including touring with some big names (Rick Wakeman and Val
Doonican). Bassist/vocals Roger Newell is still touring with Wakeman and Marty Wilde and writes reviews
and articles for a specialist music journal. Drummer Stewart Osborn has worked in sound technology.
And John’s brother Richard disappeared without trace somewhere near a gold mine in Nevada!
Stewart, Roger and John who were from Wycombe and Loudwater throw their time and energy into
learning to record, each of them researching equipment, sharing experiences, adding ideas; a hotbed of
creativity and excitement. For most of a year, fitting in between their busy lives, they dedicate a day or
maybe two a week for months, enquiring about production methods and equipment, with help from old
friends in the business and learning that digital studio stuff!
Nearly ready to press the ‘go’ button, they talk to other musicians/writers, only to find that now they must
safeguard their music against ‘social media’. There may be no way to claim their own music. Fifty years
ago, for their creativity and the pleasure they gave, all they got
was just enough for a Chinese meal each.
John smiles and says that vinyl is hard to download and only 500
limited edition copies are being produced. It may only amount to
a small hill of beans but it’s our hill of beans!
So 48 years after the first album (Parlophone) they have released
‘Rainbow Ffolly Ffollow Up!’ John and wife Jane have created
the artwork as they did 48 years ago on ‘Rainbow Ffolly Sallies
Fforth’. The Sallies Fforth design came 3rd in cover designs in
1968.
In July Rainbow Ffolly will be for sale in vinyl shops (we hope)!
There will be a CD released as well, eventually, of course.
