HAPPY HEARTS First Aid Tips By Sammy Davies Now that we are in the thick of the cooler weather and our heaters are fired up, it’s a good time to have a refresher about carbon monoxide poisoning and the simple steps to ensure it doesn’t happen to our families. Every household that burns gas, oil or wood requires a carbon monoxide detector, in addition to a smoke alarm. So what is carbon monoxide poisoning? The gas has no smell, no taste, no sound and you cannot see it. Because of this, carbon monoxide poisoning is often referred to as the “silent killer”. Carbon monoxide is released when incomplete burning of a fuel has occurred, and it can escape into the air we breathe. If inhaled, carbon monoxide attaches to haemoglobin and takes the place of oxygen within the blood stream. Because the cells of the body are no longer receiving oxygen, the body begins to shut down. It causes about 40 deaths per year in the UK and is more likely to affect the young and the elderly (RoSPA, 2018). JULIET LETHBRID GE COUN SELLING Helping you to help yourself My name is Juliet.
