Now then, as most of you know, I always feature restaurants in Buckinghamshire. In
fact, everything in Hiya Bucks magazines is Buckinghamshire based. However, this
month, with it being Christmas and all, I thought some of you might like to venture
just outside of Buckinghamshire to visit this very festive sounding village.
It takes just 15 minutes to get to
The Fox & Hounds along the
M40 from the Handy Cross High
Wycombe junction. Exit at J5
Stokenchurch, turn left onto the
A40 and then left again onto the
Nettlebed/Henley Road. This
brings you right into Christmas
Common, it couldn’t be simpler.
Affectionately known as the
Top Fox, this pub is over 500
years old and welcomes walkers,
cyclists and dogs (in the bar). The
pub is surrounded by beautiful
countryside so it would be perfect
to have lunch and then walk off the calories, or
have a walk to build up an appetite. We didn’t
have time to walk today – sunset at 4.20 pm is
really most inconvenient!
The pub would be a great venue for a private
function too and if you want to celebrate
someone’s birthday they will even provide a cake
for you.
The food is locally sourced as much as possible
and they cater for various dietary requirements,
but please give them notice if
you need something specific.
You can eat in the bar with
your dog (if you have one) or
George, the pub’s labrador, will
be more than happy to keep you
company. Alternatively you can
sit in the main restaurant; there
are a couple of the cosy, quiet
sections if you want your own
space.
We chose from the Top Fox
pub classics; the ham, egg and
homemade chunky chips and
the burger served with brie and
chorizo (with gluten-free bread especially for
me). They were both hearty, warming meals
and we thoroughly enjoyed them.
We finished our meals with a cup of tea served
in a traditional tea cup, very quaint and English.
Tea always tastes better in a tea cup don’t you
think?
With a spacious car park, nice clean toilets and
roaring log fires we felt very welcome and look
forward to visiting again soon.
