Hedgerley Historical Society
With the approaching 100th Anniversary Commemorations
next year Hedgerley Historical Society has commenced
a research project on Hedgerley during
the Great War.
In 1914 the combined population of Hedgerley and
Hedgerley Dean was 250 and of these 88 able bodied
men left South Buckinghamshire to fight for their
country. Sadly 10 of these men were killed in action or
died later as a result of their injuries. A plaque in St
Mary’s Church lists their names:
William Joseph BIRCH
William F BODDY
Christopher William
BOWDEN
George COX
C HARRIS
Thomas HEARNE
J HOBBS
Francis Edmund PINER
George Herbert
STEVENSON
PJ STOCKWELL
Hedgerley Memorial Hall was built in 1921 as a lasting memorial
to the sacrifice of these men and a plaque inside the hall includes
the names of all 88 men who served their country. Also in St
Mary’s Church there is a memorial to the men who died plus
the boys from the Court Farm children’s home who died in the
conflict.
Our study will look at the lives of all these men and boys and the
impact the War had on Hedgerley. We hope that the research
will provide us with a greater insight into life in Hedgerley one
hundred years ago and possibly reveal unknown photographs
and documents from this period in our history.
I would therefore be pleased to hear from readers of the Hiya Bucks
whose ancestors lived in Hedgerley before and during the First World
War. We would like to collect stories from this turbulent period of
history and to copy any photographs and letters if possible.
Thank you
