The Gardening Club - Holtspur
Primary School
The Gardening
Club has
started to relax
slightly after the
excitement of our
pond opening
last month. The
children are really
enjoying the new area and the pond
life seems to expand each time I
check.
In the recent winds we did suffer
some damage to our ageing
greenhouse (Santa are you
listening?) and our already leaning
shed is now leaning slightly more,
but this adds to it’s quirkiness and
a strategically placed hanging
basket acts as a great counter
balance. The chickens didn’t seem to
mind either after we replaced their
tarpaulin and provided them with a
whole bale of fresh straw to snuggle
up in.

The children have started sowing
seeds for next year’s Chelsea Flower
Show The bulk of the seeds will
be planted in December and my
little gardening gang will be sent
home with a selection to nurture
over the holidays. This is the part
they love doing, and their parents
probably dread (no pressure Mum’s
and Dad’s), but seeing their faces
when they bring back some very
impressive plants in the New Year
is worth the worry I go through
wondering if any will come back at
all. They never fail to surprise me with
their efforts though. In total they will
plant around 10 different varieties
of flowers and vegetables so the
windowsills of quite a few houses
in the area (mine included) will be
brimming with tiny pots.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a
Healthy and Happy New Year
