Thank you to the readers who have responded to
appeals from local charities for volunteers. I love
to receive feedback from different organisations
saying how thrilled they are with the response
from Hiya Bucks readers.
I’ve been a volunteer for various things over the
years and have enjoyed meeting new people and
having a laugh. When my son was 7 he joined
the colts section of Wooburn Narkovians Cricket
Club. I used to tag along on a Sunday morning to
meet other parents, soak up the sunshine, enjoy
the view of Wooburn Park and watch my son and
his new team mates learn how to play cricket.
But something was missing; a cup of tea and a
bacon sandwich!
Consequently, without actually planning it, I
somehow managed to set up the Sunday morning
café serving, you guessed it, cups of tea and
bacon sandwiches. As you can imagine, they
went down a real storm and I worked every
Sunday morning during the colts cricket season
for 10 years! Of course I had lots of helpers, I
couldn’t do it alone, and I’m pleased to say the
café is still up and running.
In this edition of Hiya Bucks you’ll find an article
about a book that has just been written by Karen
Savage; Up Narkover (page 17). This book
celebrates 80 years of Wooburn Narkovians
Cricket Club and, if you look closely, you’ll see a
photo of me being rewarded for my dedication to
said bacon sandwiches. If that doesn’t make you
buy the book well …. What can I say? Joking
aside, the book has been a five year labour of
love for Karen and it’s a great read for anyone
local, anyone interested in local history or, in fact,
anyone interested in cricket.
And, finally, a quick message to all my lovely
volunteer knitters – your handmade hats
and jumpers boarded a plane
bound for Zambia on 17th
July, photos to appear in next
month’s edition. Thank you,
the children will be thrilled.
Stay safe everyone.
