Cricket has been played in Wooburn Park for over 150 years , and Wooburn Narkovians Cricket Club moved from Holtspur to take up residence there in 1939 , when Wooburn Parish Council purchased the park from the owners of Wooburn House , for the princely sum of £ 3550 .
At that time , there were five cricket clubs in Wooburn Parish , but today , only one remains . Happily , the Narkovians are in good health , and the club last year celebrated its 80th anniversary , and 40 years since it started its junior section .
The club runs two Saturday senior teams , which play in the Thames Valley Cricket League , and one , playing friendly fixtures , on Sundays . It also runs junior sides at ages from U9 upwards , and this year , is planning to run a second Sunday side , with the aim of providing more opportunities for young players to make the transition from junior to senior cricket .
The Narks are a sociable bunch , and are always on the look-out for new members , whether to play , officiate , help , or simply support . Social membership costs only £ 10 , and offers the opportunity to enjoy watching cricket in the lovely surroundings of Wooburn Park .
New playing members are especially welcome , and are invited to participate in pre-season nets , which are held at Davenies School , Beaconsfield , on Sunday evenings , from 6-8pm .
Junior coaching starts on Sunday 23rd April ( 10am to 12 noon ) for ages U8 to U15 and continues every week to the end of August with the Sunday café open for bacon rolls and refreshments . Our popular Mini coaching for reception , year 1 and year 2 children will start on Friday 5th May ( 6.30pm to 7.45pm ) and is an ideal introduction to cricket for girls and boys looking to try the game out . For parents and families the bar is open to get the weekend off to a sporting start .
