SEPTEMBER greetings

Plant life

HQ

Summer seems to have disappeared for a while as I write this in mid August . The cooler , damper weather has kick-started the garden into growing again after a great long spell of dry , sunny weather over the last few months .
September is yet another busy month in the garden , especially in the fruit garden . The early apples will be just about ready to pick now and there are an awful lot of blackberries out there that need picking this month . But they do need picking before Michaelmas day towards the end of September as the devil spits on them then and curses the fruit , so get picking before then !!
Now the grass is growing well September is a good month to get the lawn renovations done . A good scarify will rid the lawn of unwanted thatch and moss and give the lawn plenty of time to recover before winter . Over seeding bare patches can also be carried out now along with an autumn / winter lawn feed . These are higher in potash and will help toughen up the grass for winter .

It ’ s also time to get planting the bulbs this month . Planning ahead for the next few months of colour is one of the great joys of my job . Planting Daffodils and Tulips etc is a good reminder that spring will be on its way soon to give your border or garden a bright splash of early colour .
My plant of the month is Nerine bowdenii , a great showy bulb that will flower through the autumn with its bright pink blooms . You may be able to find some pot grown specimens to fill a space in the border for this year and many years to come .
Until next month enjoy the fruit picking .
