It ’ s that time of year again . The new pencil cases are stocked , name tags are attached and the uniform is ready to go . The kids are heading back to school !
For most , this means excitement - but for some , there is a shadow looming . An 11 + shaped shadow .
This year the 11 + is scheduled for 14th September , meaning students only have six school days to get back into the swing of academic life .
How can you help your child deal with the challenge awaiting them ?
1 ) Don ’ t bombard them with work
All children are tired at the start of term , regardless of their age . There is so much for them to take in as they settle into their new routine and having to concentrate for large portions of the day takes its toll after the long break . Be mindful to allow your child time to rest and recover after busy days .
4 ) Address their biggest fears
It ’ s crucial that your child understands what will happen after the test - whether they pass or not . Many parents spend a long time extolling the virtues of grammar school , but don ’ t even mention what will happen if that ’ s not an option . Have a plan for all eventualities and make sure that your child understands and is happy with it .
2 ) Play vocabulary and general knowledge games
Although this is not the time to introduce anything too daunting or complicated , reminding your child of words they ’ ve learnt , or refreshing some of their general knowledge facts , could come in very handy . Under the current CEM exam board , roughly 50 % of the questions in the 11 + are vocabulary based so having a good arsenal of words is an excellent foundation for the exam .
3 ) Make sure your child has a plan for the test
The silliest things can play on a child ’ s mind and distract them . Make sure they know where they are sitting the papers , what they can take in , how the papers will be administered etc . Do all you can to answer any questions your child may have . Remember that , for many children , this is the first ‘ proper ’ exam they will sit and it ’ s a daunting prospect .
5 ) Keep it in perspective
Yes , the 11 + is an important test for many children . Yes , it ’ s a great opportunity . And , yes , they should take it seriously and give their best effort .
BUT your child needs to know there is life after the 11 +. And they will be able to achieve anything they put their mind to in either school . You need to let them know that the 11 + is an important hurdle , but not the only hurdle . Passing does not guarantee a successful academic career , and not making the grade definitely does not ensure a failed one .
Good luck to all the Year 6 pupils from everyone at Hiya Bucks and , just think , this time next month it will all be over !
