The village is home to lots of lovely , quirky shops , as well as hairdressers , beauty salons , a post office , coffee shops and restaurants . A personal favourite of ours was Big Sky on the High Street , an absolutely stunning shop that ’ s like stepping into a treasure trove , complete with a magical garden . There is street parking available , as well as a pay and display car park on Link Road .
Of course , one of Great Missenden ’ s most famous landmarks is Missenden Abbey , which dates back to 1133 . Post WWII , the house was acquired by Bucks County Council and used as an Adult Education Centre . In 1985 the Abbey was struck by a tragic fire , completely gutting the interior and calling for a thorough refurbishment . Today , many original features have been retained , including vaulted rooms , a ceremonial staircase , stained glass windows and ornate plasterwork .
The Abbey , now a popular conference , wedding and events venue , invited us to try their afternoon tea . Being a warm day , our table was outside overlooking the magnificent grounds , and the excellent service combined with the tasty food made for a lovely afternoon . Missenden Abbey also offers Bed & Breakfast with rooms in both the Abbey itself and the Coach House . For more information , visit www . missendenabbey . co . uk / bed-andbreakfast
