Festivals are entertaining huge audiences with
celebrities and performers all over the country,
but you don’t need to travel far because, for its
50th season, the Wooburn Festival is once again
bringing the very best of art and music to your
doorstep.
It was the idea of the late Richard Hickox CBE,
one of Britain’s leading orchestral conductors
who, 49 years ago, brought musicians of
international repute to play high quality
music which could be easily and economically
enjoyed. From humble beginnings, but with
great ambition, it has become the Festival in the
Chilterns and Thames Valley.
Over the years the Festival has offered an
ever-widening range of events featuring jazz,

folk and opera as well as Chamber and Choral
music. The Spoken Word Week held in Bourne
End Library features events led by authors
and poets in the same venue that presents a
Photographic Exhibition.
The hugely popular Visual Arts Exhibition has
become the most prestigious exhibition of its
type in the whole region. Paintings, pottery,
sculpture and jewellery are exhibited by some
100 invited artists each year.
Performance and presentation are always
of the highest standard, and have featured
many famous names. Young artists have
been attracted to Wooburn when they were
beginning their professional careers and many
have since become well known.
