WINDSOR AND THE NAZIS - DUPE OR TRAITOR?
instead of Two Convenient Political Deaths
The Duke of Windsor’s wartime dealings with
the Nazis is one of the Royal Family’s most
closely guarded secrets.
In 1940, when Britain was facing invasion and defeat, the
exiled Duke held a series of discussions with senior Nazi
officials in neutral Spain and Portugal to where he had
decamped after the fall of France. Clandestine contacts
were maintained during his subsequent tenure as wartime
Governor General of the Bahamas. When incriminating
German documents were
discovered by the Americans
after the War, British officials
and diplomats went to extraordinary lengths to obstruct,
then delay and finally to denigrate their public release.
Today, many sensitive files remain embargoed - protected
by the 100 year rule accorded, uniquely, to the Royal
Archives. However, the subsequent separate release of
previously hidden or classified German and American files
strongly suggests that, at Britain’s darkest hour, the Duke
was indeed pursuing a highly disturbing personal agenda
in direct conflict with Britain’s war objectives. Historian
Tony Eaton assesses the latest evidence.
Tony Eaton is now retired after a long career in Healthcare,
most recently as Director of the London & Thames
Valley Pharmaceutical Group. Today, as a researcher
and historian, he has a special interest in unravelling
some of the hitherto unresolved mysteries of the 2nd
World War. As such he has become recognised as an
authority on the bizarre ‘Peace Mission’ to Britain of
Hitler’s Deputy - Rudolf Hess, the deep flaws in Hitler’s
much-vaunted plans for a cross-channel invasion, and
the curious disappearance of the famous American
bandleader Major Glenn Miller.
