We were actually heading for the Thame
Food Festival, but driving down the
country lanes on the scenic route to
Thame I noticed signs for the nearby
Butlers Cross. “Let’s take a detour to
Coombe Hill” I suggested and we all
agreed it was a good idea.
You may recall we visited Coombe
Hill a couple of years ago, but the fog
descended and we were reduced to
seeing basically nothing. It made for an
atmospheric visit at the time, but we
promised ourselves we would return on
a nice sunny day.
On this second visit the view from the
monument was simply amazing! I don’t
think it would be possible to see any
further without the use of binoculars;
I could almost see my brother waving
from his home in the Cotswolds!
Built as a memorial to the
Buckinghamshire men who fought in the
Boer War, it is a striking and thought-
provoking monument that watches over
so much of Buckinghamshire. It was
lovely to see families, young and old,
enjoying the fresh air and the stunning
views.
There is free car parking and it’s just a
20 minute casual walk to the monument.
Of course, there are many footpaths
and off-piste tracks to make for a much
longer walk but the main path is easy to
follow and is ideal for wheelchair users
and pushchairs.
Continuing our journey to Thame Food
Festival we passed Buckmoorend Farm
shop and as we have communicated
with them via social media recently we
thought we would pop in and say Hello.
Run by Daniel and Steph, the farm shop
is stocked with lots of local produce
and, by the time you read this article,
their state-of-the-art new mobile kitchen
will be up and running and serving hot
snacks and drinks. Perfect for the cold
winter days ahead.
No excuses now, combine your visit to
Coombe Hill with a well-deserved hot
drink and warming sausage roll (other
options are available) and enjoy.
By the way, we finally made it to Thame
Food Festival and it was well worth the
trip. Make a note in your diaries for next
year. It’s only a stone’s throw over the
border into Oxfordshire.
