For example, goldfinches will not get too close
to the house or to people, as they find it too
uncomfortable. For many Millstream
Fork goldfinches the nearest they
get is the bird table on the patio
where some of their favourite food
supply is.
On the other hand, chaffinches will
approach much closer to the house
even when I am sitting out on the
patio. When I keep still and make
no sudden moves, the more brightly
coloured and gregarious male drops
his guard and visits me.
One such occasion was when I had breakfast
outside on the patio during a fine summer
morning. A trusting male chaffinch bobbed
around on the patio quite freely for ten to fifteen
minutes and even hopped onto the patio table as
I finished my meal. I think most people would be
thoroughly ‘charmed’ by these most beautiful of
British birds.

More Noise Needed about Quiet Fireworks
At this time of year,
people with pets,
those concerned
about wildlife and
some people with
hearing sensitivity,
autism or PTSD,
dread the impending
fireworks. What few
people are aware
of however is that
Quieter Fireworks
exist - amongst
current offerings that
are in displays or for
sale in the UK.
According to High
Wycombe based
fireworks display
company, Total
Pyro, the majority of
their out of season
fireworks are now quieter fireworks.
Locations hosting regular fireworks
often need to use them because the
public complain about noise (as can
you if somewhere has them regularly).
Searching online and speaking to
Total Pyro, you’ll discover that many
companies offer low bang fireworks
as part of their normal range. One for
example, has a ‘bangometer’ for each
firework, with bang ranges from 1-10;
10 the loudest, 1 the quietest. Some
have a bang level of 10 and yet a colour
rating of 1, whereas another has a bang
rating of 1 and colour of 10.
Considerate Beaconsfield set up as
a Facebook group to raise awareness
and encourage Beaconsfield to become
the place that uses these more - in
consideration of wildlife, pets and many
people. Please like the page, share
posts and get the word round about
using quieter fireworks.
