:
the creation and role of the Waddesdon Gardens
National Trust,
In this talk Catherine Taylor, Waddesdon’s Head Archivist, talks about the creation of the Waddesdon
Gardens by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild between 1874 and 1898. Using archive sources held at
Waddesdon, Catherine looks at the cost of the creation of Waddesdon and what Baron Ferdinand was
looking to achieve, as well as reflecting on contemporary visitors’ experiences. She illustrates her talk
with both historic and modern images of the gardens and of the archive sources that help to tell this story.
Catherine qualified in 2000 and has been the Head Archivist at Waddesdon for just over five years.
