As the sun finally makes an appearance there is much talk about dieting ready for summer . As a Nutritional Therapist , many ‘ diets ’ concern me from a health point of view .
Diets may indeed lead to weight loss , but there is often subsequent weight gain once the diet ends . This is unhealthy in the long-term and may upset your metabolism which can lead to a perpetual struggle with weight .

Traditional approaches of low-calorie and low-fat diets may deprive the body of vital nutrients which could cause more problems later . For instance , the caffeine in a zero-calorie , black coffee can stimulate stress hormone release which may lead to weight gain . ( This kind of stress hormone fat accumulation often sits around your middle .) And did you know you require healthy fat to absorb the essential vitamins A , D , E & K , and some fats even help promote weight loss ? What ’ s important is to eat the right fats and calories in the right balance and quantity . Healthy fats would typically include those from oily fish , or a thumb-sized portion of extra virgin olive oil , raw cold-pressed nut and seed oil ( or the nuts & seeds themselves for additional nutrients ), or coconut oil .
A chocolate bar provides little nutritional value and a lot of sugar and unhealthy fats . Whereas the equivalent calories from , say , an avocado offer fats and nutrients which may help promote the health of your heart , blood , bones , skin , nerves and digestive system . The healthy fats may also help slow the absorption of its sugars offering a steady release of energy . Which do you think your body would prefer ?
Health is not just about looking good , it ’ s about feeling good . Nutritional Therapy strives to offer safe , effective weight loss strategies with the priority being your long-term health .
