Restaurant Review

The Russell Arms Butlers Cross

Having walked to the monument at the top of Coombe Hill ( read our article on page 32 ) we were in need of a spot of lunch .
Luckily for us , The Russell Arms is at the bottom of the hill just a five minute drive from Coombe Hill car park . With roaring logs fires the pub was very welcoming on this dull , damp , day .
Dating back to 1784 , we were pleasantly surprised to see how bright and spacious the bar and restaurant were . No dark beams and dingy corners in this pub - it is light and bright with plenty of space between tables . The centrally located bar , to us , was the main focus and it has more of a wine bar feel to it than a traditional pub . However dogs , children and muddy boots are all still welcome .
Now owned by the community and managed by the lovely Tom and Alice , the pub has rightfully achieved the status of being a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant in the 2017 Great Britain and Ireland Guide . We are not surprised . The food is simply delicious , there is no other word for it . Using local produce as much as possible ; it looks good , smells good and by golly it tastes good . Our compliments go to Chef Dan for his creativity , as well as to the local artisan producers who provide The Russell Arms with quality key ingredients to work with .
We began with the bread board ; corn bread , tomato and herb bread and beer and caraway seed ( my favourite ). These breads have been exclusively created by Chef Dan and Baker Steve and are only available to eat at The Russell Arms . The breads were served with rapeseed oil and apple cider vinegar . We were off to a great start .
Of course I had to choose the Wendover Royal Pork sausages ( the pub is only a 5 minute drive from Wendover ) accompanied by the creamiest of mash possible . Goodness only knows how many calories were contained within it , but I had just walked up Coombe Hill so it was justified !
The Ice creams and Sorbets have been crafted especially for The Russell Arms with flavours and recipes that Dan and Arthur have put
