As the snowy weather has passed (we hope) we have started to move the ewes according to their scanning results. This year we have scanned at 180%. This means we will have 1.8 lambs per ewe resulting in over 450 lambs due to be born this March. We had an incident with the ewes on the farm at the beginning of January which was a dog attacking the sheep. I was out moving electric fencing when I was disturbed by screaming and shouting. To my shock my pregnant ewes were getting attacked by a dog which had been allowed off the lead. The dog took down a ewe with triplets inside her and from the stress she aborted the lambs and died the following day. This time of year is very important to sheep farms. If you are out enjoying the countryside with your dog just remember to take a lead with you. If you see livestock, or signs directing you to put dogs on a lead, please do so. This incident has had a big toll on the farm and it has been keeping me awake at night worrying about J.C.
