Working with our partnership schools in Lusaka, Zambia we have been “Making friends and changing lives through working together” DECORATING KABWATA CLASSROOMS From donations by supporters in the UK we transformed 4 classrooms and are currently redecorating another 15. LIBALA SECONDARY SCHOOL ACHIEVES MICROSOFT SHOWCASE SCHOOL STATUS Our challenge in 2017 was to support our partner school in their quest to equip a new ICT Room as part of their new status. We were extremely pleased when RSM UK offered us 50 laptops that were only a year old. We received a donation which covered the cost of getting them sent out by air freight so that they arrived in time to be set up. The ICT Week itself was excellent, visitors from the Ministry of Education, Headteachers and ICT teachers from all the secondary schools in Lusaka came to see the new and exciting programmes that the school can now deliver. KABWATA PRE-SCHOOL ROOM There were no windows, very little light and the walls were painted breeze blocks. The roof was corrugated iron so it made the room very dusty and dirty. Thanks to a grant from the Openwork Foundation we have turned it into a bright, airy and clean room. We are so pleased to see how it looks now. All we need now is to get the carpet tiles that were donated by Big Box UK laid on the floor and the teachers will have the opportunity to choose the furniture that they want for the children. The room will be named the ‘Daniel Kabwela Jnr Pre School Room’ in memory of the son of one of our Zambian Trustees who was tragically killed just before his second birthday. CHILENJE SPECIAL NEEDS LIFESKILLS ROOM Due to the wide age range of the children we have been able to set up a second room as a Lifeskills Room for the older students to learn how to cook, do washing and learn other skills to enable them to become independent. By March 2017 this room had been transformed with thanks again to the Openwork Foundation grant. Thank you also to the ladies for knitting the warm jumpers and Flackwell Heath Minors Football Club for collecting football boots. These will be taken out with us in March of this year. As we say – making friends and changing lives through working together. Let’s see what 2018 brings.
